Did you know that September is National Responsible Dog Ownership Month? We think all our pups deserve the best pet parents! To ensure they find the right fit in your family we give all the information we can to help you find the perfect Pick of the Litter. Or when you’re unsure of what to expect in the next stage of your puppy’s life- we hope to provide you with answers through our blog.
Responsible Dog Ownership Month serves as a reminder that dog ownership goes beyond providing food, water, and shelter for our furry friends. It is making sure their physical, mental, and emotional needs are met too- repaying the joy and fulfillment we receive from our canine companions.
Health and Wellness
Prioritizing the health and wellness of our pets is an important aspect of dog ownership. Regular veterinary check-ups, vaccinations, and preventive care are essential to maintaining your dog’s well-being. This month serves as a reminder to schedule any long-overdue appointments. Some Veterinary clinics will send reminders for vaccinations and screenings, but oftentimes they leave that responsibility with the owner. Here is a schedule for your pup’s first year of check-ups to help!
All Woodlot puppies are up to date on vet visits. Additionally, they are sent home with a health and wellness packet that includes their vet visit history. We encourage you to take them for a checkup with your local veterinarian and schedule any remaining vaccinations they may need to finish.
Safety Measures
All Woodlot puppies also come with a microchip identification, however it is not registered. Another reason to make an appointment with your local vet. There are many different companies to register with and your veterinarian may know the best one that is used in your area. They may also help walk you through the process.
Keeping your dog safe is a top priority! By having the proper identification with microchipping and a sturdy collar with up-to-date tags you’ve given your pup a greater chance of being found if they ever get lost. Of course, keeping your furry friend on a lead while out and about is also important for their safety.
Leash training has its challenges whether you have a pup who is resistant or overly excited. However, proper training can go a long way in preventing possible mishaps. This safety measure can prevent accidents and potential conflicts with other dogs.
Training and Socialization
When your pup is well-behaved it not only improves your relationship, but makes friends, family, or neighbors more bonded too. A well-trained dog is better for socialization with other canines and people. Responsible Dog Ownership Month reminds us to invest time and effort into training. Teaching them basic commands and socializing from an early age will develop confidence, reduce anxiety, and help them become friendly and approachable pups!
Training is as simple as playing in the backyard with a ball or taking a walk around the neighborhood. There is also learning and bonding in being a part of the family routine. Your furry friend thrives on human interaction! Knowing how to calm and cuddle is just as important as learning to fetch. Spending quality time together, playing with them, and offering cuddles and affection are crucial for their emotional well-being.
Considering all these aspects as a responsible pet owner will make you an exceptional dog parent!
